22 Great Things To Do In Lille With Kids

I studied for a year in Lille and loved it, so I think it is a shame it is often overlooked in favor of the more famous Paris or South of France cities

For starters, Lille is a good representative of an underrated cultural corner of France: the North, which the French call La Flandres or, informally, the Ch’ti region. That alone makes it worthy of being on the list of best day trips from Paris

But it’s not just that: Lille is also all about gorgeous architecture, stunning museums, lively streets, and cute restaurants and cafés to try in the most beautiful and atypical old town in Europe.

Located in the northern tip of France, there are plenty of things to do in Lille with kids, especially over a weekend or a day trip from Paris.

Lille For Kids

First, let’s address a few concerns you might have: Lille is one of the most family-friendly cities in France. Here is a good list of reasons why:

Lower costs: We know costs add up quickly when travelling as a family. Lille is a more affordable and approachable destination in France than, let’s say, Paris or Nice.

It’s one of those cities you should pick if you’re wondering how to travel on a budget in Europe. From the accommodations to the attractions to the food, Lille is cheaper on every level than many other cities in France (in great part because it has a significant student population).

Navigable layout: the city’s compact design makes it easy to navigate. With most attractions, parks, and landmarks just a short walk away, you can easily plan lots of things to do in Lille with kids without worrying about long commutes or getting lost in a sprawling urban maze.

Walkable: Lille is very walkable, thanks to well-managed and smooth streets. Streets are well-marked and often lined with pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, making them safe and manageable for those with strollers or young children.

In the old town, especially, few cars are driving around. Lille is a lot less noisy than Paris, for example.

Public transportation: Public transportation, including trams and a metro system, is also easily accessible and efficient.

It provides convenient options for those visiting Lille with kids, especially If little ones need a break from walking. It is reliable and secure, with frequent services and a visible staff presence.

Safe: The streets are well-lit, and the public squares are active, so you’re perfectly safe even during evening strolls in Lille with kids.

Lille strongly focuses on car traffic calming measures to reduce hazards, ensure a safer environment, and provide peace of mind for parents.

Kid-friendly spaces: Lille has many green spaces for children to play and explore. Restaurants and cafés often feature kid menus with dishes little ones will love.

Colours: Lille is one of the most colourful cities I’ve visited in Europe. Its primary architectural style is a mix of Art Deco and Flemish, so there are many colours, textures, and interesting materials everywhere. Kids love that!

1. Walk The Old Town Of Lille With Kids

Vieux Lille (the Old Town of Lille) is where the charm of Lille is up to a hundred. It’s full of cute cobblestone streets and alleys and adorable shops, colourful cafés and restaurants at every corner.

Iconic landmarks include Vieille Bourse, the Belfry of the Chamber of Commerce and the cathedral Notre-Dame-de-Treille.

The best part of Vieux Lille is always the architecture. In my opinion, few cities do it like Lille: I could (and did!) spend hours meandering the streets, admiring the glorious Flemish-influenced architecture and meticulously restored historic buildings.

When visiting Lille with kids, it’s enjoyable to wander around and take in all the colours of Art Deco architecture.

In addition to being one of the most charming parts of Lille, the Old Town is also the centre of cultural life and, thus, the heart and soul of the city. It’s very active all day and night, so you’ll surely enjoy it a great deal.

2. Read Comics At Vieille Bourse

Vieille Bourse, Lille’s old Chamber of Commerce and Stock Exchange, is a place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Located in the heart of Lille, this 1653 building is stunning, with its ornate Renaissance facade and detailed carvings. It is now a courtyard filled with second-hand book vendors and flower stalls, which is pretty much paradise for the bookworm and vintage lover I am.

Nothing feels better than wandering the streets of Lille and stumbling across this little corner of the city. If you visit Lille with kids, they will LOVE the comics and toys they will find there.

3. Learn about French military history in the Vauban Citadel of Lille

The Vauban Citadel of Lille is a star-shaped fortress still in military use today. Have you ever seen other star-shaped fortresses scattered around France?

Thanks to legendary engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Louis XIV’s go-to guy for fortress building in the 17th century, his designs are feats in military engineering.

The starry points let soldiers cover all angles, making it tricky for attackers to sneak up without being spotted.

This allowed France to resist many sieges and, through the networks of different fortresses, bolster its military infrastructure to become a military power in Europe.

Today, the Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage encircled by deep moats and a park where families picnic and kids play.

The Vauban Citadel

Although you can’t just wander in any time (it is still an active military base, after all), there are special days when the Citadel is fully open for guided tours. This allows you to check out the historical digs and learn about the Citadel’s past.

The setting and guided visits are a great learning opportunity for children, who will get to hear about France’s history, engineering, architecture and military tactics. (Though if you like French history, Amboise in the Loire Valley is the place to go).

The park also has playgrounds, a mini-golf course, and a small zoo that is free to enter making it the perfect place to visit in Lille with kids.

4. Visit Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral

Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille is one of the most interesting-looking Cathedrals I have seen in my life. Construction started in the 19th century and didn’t wrap up for over a hundred years, which is well reflected in the blending of traditional Gothic style with modern architectural elements.

They spent a century building the place and by the time it was done, it was already time for a renovation! That’s kind of what happened there.

The cathedral’s façade is particularly striking, and the portal is all in marble, which I found incredibly cool since the material plays with the light in an interesting way.

It’s a fancy light show. The interior of Notre Dame de la Treille is equally impressive, with modern stained glass that throws around colours so vivid you feel like you’ve walked into a kaleidoscope.

It certainly made my Instagram pop! I know the Cathedral looks ugly from the outside, but trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

5. Smallicieux

Smallicieux is an recreational and educational space designed for families with children aged 2 to 8. It offers a wide variety of interactive activities that encourages learning through play and experimentation.

This is a great rainy day activity in Lille with kids. Children can enjoy water games, wooden constructions, special effects and building sites, all whilst encouraging a curiosity and interest in the sciences.

Entry is approximately €8 per person.

Location: Centre Commercial Lillenium, deuxième étage, 2 rue du Faubourg des Postes, 59000 LILLE

6. Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island or “L’Île de Tortuga”, is the largest indoor leisure park in Northern France. This play area is great for children aged 0-12.

This is another great rainy day activity in Lille with kids. Tortuga Island offers a range of activities, such as climbing walls, trampolines and pedal-powered helicopters. The centre is well maintained and there is free Wi-Fi available.

The “Taverne de la Tortue” serves burgers, poke bowls, pastries and much needed caffeine!

If you’re looking for a place to get the pulse of Lille with kids, Grand Place is it. It’s a big square surrounded by gorgeous buildings displaying a good mix of architectural styles, from the Flemish Renaissance to the Baroque, making it an iconic landmark in the city.

It is the locals ‘ favourite rendezvous spot because it is a huge, impossible-to-miss square with a big fountain.

Grand Place

They say if you stand long enough in Grand Place, you’ll meet everyone you know in Lille! (And the saying is accurate because it did happen to me).

It’s very much the social hub of Lille, thanks to the variety of events throughout the year, including the famous Christmas market and the summer outdoor concerts.

In the various cafés in the square, you can sip your coffee, and your children can have their hot chocolate while watching street performers do their thing.

8. Get A Bite To Eat A Market Of Wazemmes

If you’re craving a slice of local life, you can’t miss the Covered Marché de Wazemmes. In my opinion, it’s the best place to try local food.

You can find almost anything there, from fresh fruits and veggies to exotic spices and local delicacies. It’s got great bargains and unbeatable atmosphere.

The Covered Market of Wazemmes

My tip: don’t visit the market without a shopping list, because you might come home with everything in there because it all looks good! It gets costly very fast!

You will also find plenty of North African restaurants in the Wazemmes neighbourhood, so it might be the perfect opportunity to try couscous at a good Algerian or Moroccan restaurant. Prices are cheap, and quantities are significant, so make sure to have one couscous for two!

9. Climb The Belfry Of Lille With Kids

The Belfry of Lille is a tower standing tall at 104 meters. Yes, it is the tallest belfry in Northern France. It was constructed relatively recently (1924 to 1932), so its architectural style is a blend of Art Deco and, once again, regional Flemish style.

This is your spot if you’re hunting for the best views in town in Lille with kids. The climb might be challenging on little legs, but from up top, you can catch the most breathtaking panoramas of Lille and the countryside stretching out beyond.

10. Teach Your Kids About Art At The Beaux-Arts Museum

A trip to Lille is incomplete without a visit to the Palais des Beaux-Arts. One of the largest museums in France, it houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and antiques that span centuries of European art.

The museum’s halls are lined with works by masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, and Delacroix, which is pretty much Christmas Day for art enthusiasts.

Just a short tram ride away, the Modern Arts Museum welcomes visitors into the world of modern and contemporary art.

The museum, surrounded by a sculpture garden, features works by Picasso, Modigliani, and Miró, alongside less conventional creations by self-taught artists.

The two museums often offer kid-friendly activities, such as drawing and painting workshops, so check for that on their websites before going.

11. Hall U Need

Hall U Need is a a huge indoor leisure complex, offering a range of activities for all ages. This is another great option in Lille with kids if the weather is not great.

The indoor complex has a restaurant and bar, with the offering of a childrens menu. There is with both indoor and outdoor seating, a bowling alley, karaoke rooms, interactive and thrilling games, a 4D virtual reality experience, arcade games, and a dedicated children’s play area.

Additionally, Hall U Need provides workspaces and hosts themed events such as live concerts, sports broadcasts, and DJ nights.

12. Vinage Farm

La Ferme du Vinage near Lille is a lovely day out for families with kids. Families can enjoy hands-on farm experience, where the farm beautifully blends education and enjoyment.

There are interactive farm tours where you can meet calves and learn about how artisanal cheese is made. There is a dedicated play area that is ideal for younger children.

With its family-friendly atmosphere, the farm allows children to connect with nature and gain a deeper understanding of sustainable farming practices in an enjoyable way.

The on-site farm shop offers a range of artisanal food good such as cheeses, butters and yogurts. The free Saturday tours are a great way for families to learn the traditions of French agriculture.

Location: La Ferme du Vinage is located at 4 Carrière Madame Deflandre, 59223 Roncq, France.

13. Explore The Shopping Scene

If you too consider shopping a sport, you’ll be happy to learn that Lille offers plenty of opportunities to flex those muscles.

Vieux Lille is full of great independent stores and high-end brands occupying beautiful, historical buildings—like Louis Vuitton, which is located today in an old luxury seafood restaurant (see picture below).

Another option is Euralille, a modern mall home to over 120 stores, including international brands and local boutiques.

The last option, my personal favourite, is the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in Roubaix: here, you’ll find luxury brand goods for a discounted price, so wait no more! Take your money and come back with ten bags.

14. Try The Local Flemish Cuisine

Lille’s food scene is a mash-up of French flair and Flemish fun. The local bistros (called estaminet in the Flemish language) serve some good food that blends the best of both cultures.

You’ve got to try the Carbonnade Flamande, a beer-braised beef stew with a sauce made out of gingerbread – delicious. Or Potjevleesch, a jellied cold meat terrine that’s a throwback to old-school Flemish cooking – not my cup of tea, I’ll admit, but an experience for sure.

I cannot recommend Estaminet au Vieux de la Vieille enough. The restaurant is located on rue des Vieux Murs and is a bit pricier (though not by much), but it is so worth it.

And for your sweet tooth? Well, you can’t skip Meert. It’s a legendary patisserie that has been whipping up its famous vanilla waffles since 1761. This has to be my top recommendation for families visiting Lille with kids.

It’s set in an opulent salon, the kind of place where you can sit down, treat yourself to some decadent desserts, and feel a bit like royalty. Your daughter would probably love this!

15. Enjoy An Evening Out In Lille With Kids

Lille is a student city, thanks to several international universities and schools. So when the night falls, it transforms into an eclectic, global and buzzing town.

The fields have a wide variety of flowers that change throughout the seasons, such as tulips, gladiolo, dahlias and sunflowers.

Lille offers a good range of day trips over decent distances. Here is a list of my favourite of them all:

  • Etretat, a city in Normandy with big white chalk cliffs and stunning beach views.
  • Bruges, the Belgian capital of chocolate.
  • Ghent, a cute little Belgian city with some interesting artifacts, including a part of the Christian Cross. Yes, THE Cross.
  • Brussels is the actual capital of Belgium. Very chic, very international.
  • Baie de la Somme, beautiful nature that inspired poets all around.
  • Dunkirk, for some fascinating WWII history.

Final Thoughts

As a student, I thought Lille was a fantastic city and quite enjoyed spending a year there. Every time I got out of the house, I was greeted by such beautiful and diverse architecture, as well as the cutest cafés, restaurants, and stores.
